Judith Okely spoke about the difficulty in having her work on Traveller-Gypsies recognized within English social anthropology in the 1970s and 1980s (Okely 1994), while Leonardo Piasere referred to the "invisible ghetto of gypsy studies" that is "just as marginalized in academia as gypsies are socially" (1994a, 21). Outside anthropology Dr Okely draws on her own extensive fieldwork and on contemporary documents.
