Ichikawa Danjūrō I made a kabuki adaptation of the noh play Ataka as soon as 1702, but it was Namiki Gohei III's 1840 version, created for Ichikawa Danjūrō V KANJINCHÔ. The dance-drama "Kanjinchô" was performed for the first time in the 3rd lunar month of 1840 at the Kawarasakiza. The 3 leading roles of Benkei, Togashi and Yoshitsune were played by Ichikawa Ebizô V, Ichikawa Kuzô II and Ichikawa Danjûrô VIII. Togachi Saemon, an intelligent, well-educated aristocrat, appears accompanied by his Yoritomo tries to capture Yoshitsune by having many checking stations built on the way to Hiraizumi. "Kanjincho" is a Kabuki play about Yoshitsune and his men passing through a station of Ataka in Kaga no Kuni (Ishikawa prefecture).
