INS Viraat, the second Centaur-Class aircraft carrier in service which has spent 30 years in the Indian Navy and 27 years in the Royal Navy, was decommissioned on the day, in a solemn yet grand ceremony at Naval Dockyard, Mumbai. The decommissioning ceremony was attended by more than 1300 personnel who have served on board INS Viraat. INS Viraat holds a prestigious place in the Guinness Book of Records as the longest-serving warship in the world. The ship's remarkable service record includes more than 22,622 flying hours by various aircraft and nearly 2,252 days at sea, covering a staggering 5,88,287 nautical miles or 10,94,215 kilometers. INS Viraat, the Aircraft Carrier with the longest service in the world, commenced its towed final journey on September 19 from Mumbai, to be broken at Alang in Gujarat and sold as scrap.
