Posted on April 15, 2013 by wcihs. James W. McKinney 1873-1950. James W. McKinney, minister, educator, and County Superintendent of Schools, was born March 13, 1871. He was the eldest son of James H. and Minerva McKinney, and was born and raised on their family farm near Hudgens in Southern Township a few miles south of Marion. The McKinney family has been identified with the county from its first year. John McKinney was here in 1839; Thomas H. McKinney marched off with Captain Cunningham's company to the Mexican war, and came home in 1848 to the welcome at Marion courthouse. James H. McKinney enlisted at Marion in Company B, 81st Illinois infantry. His desire to McKinney's Western Store has served Southern Illinois since the 1960's. Rick and Kim McKinney became the second generation to carry on the family business in 1993. They have enjoyed bringing the best brands and selection of western apparel and tack to the area for 20 years and counting.
