It was decreed a park in 1936, primarily to protect the Nevado de Toluca volcano, which forms nearly the park's entire surface and is the Ten minutes of easy hiking on a dirt road brings you to Paso de Quetzal and the crater rim. Geologists believe Nevado de Toluca was once a much taller volcano (maybe even the biggest volcano). But about 25,000 years ago, a cataclysmic eruption blew off its cone, forming a mile-wide caldera. But don't worry. Nevado de Toluca, México's fourth highest peak, rises above the Toluca basin about 80 km W of Mexico City. The broad, complex andesitic-dacitic stratovolcano, also known by the Nahuatl Indian name Xinantécatl, has a 1.5-km-wide summit crater open to the east. A large dacitic lava dome in the crater separates two lakes, known as the lakes of the Sun and Moon.
