Completed in 1935, the Stazione Santa Maria Novella is almost Stonehenge-like with its massive block of horizontal stone, broken only by a starkly modern interpretation of a waterfall made from paned glass panels. The grid of glass rises from the Art Deco extravagance of a front portico, and up and over the top of the building. The Santa Maria Novella train station in Florence, ideally located in the city centre, is the gateway for many travellers. It is a terminus station, with many services and rooms inside, whose design, which replaced the first station in Florence known as the Leopolda, dates back to 1932 and was drawn up by a group of architects.
