The North Carolina Office of Archives and History, Exploring Joara is building an Archaeological Interpretive Center at Catawba Meadows, a 200-acre city park along the banks of the Catawba River in Morganton. Morgan Welch '15, who is majoring in archaeology at UNC, participated in field work at the Berry site in summer 2012. She grew Morganton is one of the principal cities in the Hickory-Lenoir-Morganton, NC Metropolitan Statistical Area. Near the city is the significant archaeological and historic site of Joara, a regional chiefdom of Mississippian culture and the location where the Spanish built Fort San Juan in 1567. It was settled by the Mississippian culture by 1000 CE. The site is home to the Native American town Joara and home to Spanish Fort San Juan. Dr. David Moore is a professor at Warren Wilson College. He's been exploring and leading the archaeological dig there for more than 20 years. The Berry Site is an active site dating back to the 16th century.
