"Chemawa Indian School opened in 1880 in Forest Grove as part of the federal government's efforts to forcibly assimilate Native American youth. The school moved five years later. The school moved to Salem thanks in no small part to the labor of American Indian students. They earned money growing produce, making shoes and picking hops." Located just east of Keizer Station and Interstate 5 in Salem, Chemawa had 337 students enrolled as of last school year, according to the National Center for Education Statistics. In Chemawa's Chemawa threatened to close in the 1930s, 1940s, and again in the 1960s. Push-back from alumni, Salem residents, and Oregon politicians aided its survival.
