After the Russian Revolution of 1917, Prokofiev lived abroad, mostly in Paris.Though he had written several ballets while living elsewhere, Romeo and Juliet is the first he wrote for production in the Soviet Union, to which he had returned in the summer of 1936.The ballet's path to the stage was rocky.
