The first Traralgon cemetery was created in the early 1860's at the corner of Hotham and Princes Streets. At the time, Traralgon was simply a stopping place on the road to Walhalla, Jordan and Omeo gold fields. Only 12 interments were recorded. With the new railway to be extended east through Gippsland it was decided that the cemetery be moved. The Traralgon War Memorial set on the Main Street at the start of the Kay Street Gardens is in a very prominent position. To one side is the lovely Post Office and old Court House buildings and on the other side we have the historical Ryan's Hotel which incidental was built in 1914 the year the First World War started.
