Mission San Francisco Solano was founded on July 4, 1823 by Father José Altamira, the twenty-first and last of the California mission chain. It was named for Saint Francis Solano, missionary to the Indians of Peru and was originally planned as an asistencia ("sub-mission") to Mission San Rafael Arcángel.The northernmost mission is located in Sonoma, California. Mission San Francisco Solano was purchased by a preservation group in 1903, and became part of the California Park System in 1906. The two buildings that hadn't been torn down for their building materials were reconstructed by 1913, and the chapel was turned into a museum of local history.
