Abstract. Jacopo Mazzoni was an Italian philosopher, humanist, and astronomer. He held the chair of philosophy in Macerata, Pisa, Rome, Ferrara, and Venice. He is mostly remembered for his defense of Dante Alighieri ( Della difesa della Comedia di Dante, Cesena, 1587), which was the occasion to expound his reflection on poetics and aesthetics. Mazzoni is a significant health resource for LGBTQ people, offering care and culturally sensitive services not widely available elsewhere in the region. Its health center has about 16,000 visits a year. Mazzoni's clients hail from more than 780 zip codes, including but not limited to Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York, and Delaware. The Mazzoni Center has appointed Sultan Shakir as its new President and Executive Officer, following a 12-month search. Shakir, a Philadelphia native, is currently executive director of SMYAL, an LGBTQ youth services organization in Washington, DC. He will start his role at Mazzoni Center on January 10, 2022.
