WVRHC's growing online collection of 50,000+ historic images pertaining to West Virginia and the central Appalachian region, digitized from the Center's extensive physical collection. In 1836 a group of businessmen bought two riverside lots in the bustling port city of Wellsburg, West Virginia, in Brook County, on the Ohio River, and set out to build a public wharf, now a national historic landmark. Simply designed, the Wellsburg Wharf is a 200 foot long section of river bank that descends from Main Street into the water. The bank was cleared and lined with cobblestones. To Pharmacy at Wellsburg, West Virginia Wellsburg, West Virginia (WV), the county seat of Brooke County, was chartered on the Ohio River in 1791 as "Charlestown" but was renamed Wellsburg in 1816 in honor of Alexander Wells, the son-in-law of Charles Prather, who built a large flour warehouse east of the town.
