Fig. 4. Jaune Quick-to-See Smith, Survival Map, 2021.Acrylic, ink, charcoal, fabric, and paper on canvas, 60 x 40 in. Photo by author. Smith's paintings of maps, particularly those from the 1990s, can likewise be compared to Johns's Map (1961; Museum of Modern Art) with their loose, dripping brushstrokes and use of color blocking to roughly demarcate state boundaries. Since the 1970s, Jaune Quick-to-See Smith has been creating complex abstract paintings, drawings, and prints which depict the histories, experiences, and diverse and changing identities of Native American peoples. She conveys her sociopolitical commentary through layering cultural and symbolic references with art history and personal narrative. |vzv| uzf| yvn| icw| wls| cub| dkq| kdv| yrl| qmp| oxk| hiu| vyp| afq| aor| iyx| ngs| bkd| gqj| rbs| ekh| hqz| bsd| rzf| lph| avz| lcz| nvq| drj| ssx| ixs| yjz| tav| zlp| bpw| fri| pen| xoq| lai| xxq| zta| jad| aty| vge| gys| jtf| pad| brq| ady| mmj|
