LFTR reactor cores are not pressurized. Any increase in temperature results in a reduction in power, thus eliminating the problematic runaway meltdown scenario. If the fluid should get too hot, a salt plug at the bottom of the tank simply melts dumping the entire mess in to a storage vessel directly below the reactor. (1,4)
Comparison of annual fuel requirements and waste products of a 1GW uranium-fueled LWR and 1GW thorium-fueled LFTR power plant. The liquid fluoride thorium reactor (or LFTR; pr. "lifter") is a thermal breeder reactor W which uses thorium W in a fluoride-based molten salt. It operates at high temperatures and atmospheric pressure, and is hoped to provide a safe form of commercial-scale nuclear
