Focusing on chivalrous deeds and aristocratic romances, De It was Chrétien de Troyes (1135-1191) in the 12th century whose writing transformed a much cruder tradition of Arthurian legend into a truly literary form, written in the vernacular Old French rather than scholarly Latin.
