The early 1930s marked a rocky period in the Stieglitz-O'Keeffe relationship. Georgia O'Keeffe became increasingly independent, spending summers in New Mexico starting in 1929. Stieglitz began an affair with a much younger woman, Dorothy Norman. Stieglitz depicts O'Keeffe with symbols of her independence, such as her southwestern Alfred Stieglitz returned to New York in 1890 determined to prove that photography was a medium as capable of artistic expression as painting or sculpture. Stieglitz devoted his time chiefly to running his gallery (Anderson Galleries, 1921-25; The Intimate Gallery, 1925-29; An American Place, 1929-46), and he made photographs less and Hoboken, 1864-New York, 1946. Alfred Stieglitz was an American photographer who was instrumental in raising photography into an accepted art form.
