The Point-to-Point Tunneling Protocol (PPTP) is a method for implementing virtual private networks. PPTP uses a control channel over TCP and a GRE tunnel operating to encapsulate PPP packets. FreeBSD comes with PPTP client for establishing a VPN link with an NT server. FreeBSD uses the "pptp-linux" PPTP client. As a tunneling protocol, the Point-to-Point Tunneling Protocol enables data in one private network to reach another private network through a public network. This public network is usually the internet.
