The history of the land on which the Michoud Assembly Facility sits can be traced to March 10, 1763 ,when Louis XV, king of France, granted a 34,500-acre swampy, cypress tree-filled tract to French soldier and New Orleans merchant, Gilbert Antoine de St. Maxent. The land had several owners over the next five decades, including the Clouet family NASA acquired the facility in 1961. For more than 60 years, NASA's Michoud Assembly Facility in New Orleans, Louisiana, has been "America's rocket factory," the nation's premiere site for manufacturing and assembly of large-scale space structures and systems.
