During his last ten year as city manager, the population in Sacramento grew from 100,000 to 250,000 people. His father, also Bartley Cavanaugh, once lived on a farm that is now William Land Park. Bartley Cavanaugh Golf Course is the youngest of the City of Sacramento golf courses and the 18-hole course opened in 1995. Let's face it, Bartley Cavanaugh could have used more space. Eventually the golf course was built on 97.3 acres, a tight fit when putting in an 18-hole, regulation course. What Sacramento golfers got instead was a unique links-style course with some definite peculiarities. This is not a course for everyone, let's state that right up front. Architects at times do some of their best work when there isn't a lot of land. Bartley Cavanaugh Golf Course, about 15 minutes south of downtown Sacramento, falls into that category. A core course that has nine holes and adjacent to another, it doesn't play like a back-and-forth, hit-and-walk.
