The last patches of Scotland's ashwoods tend to be in inaccessible places such as steep ravines and rocky slopes. These are the woods of our richer soils, often hidden away in dens and gullies. So their distribution across Scotland is very limited. Ash is usually, but not always, the dominant tree species.
