The Wivenhoe Dam is a rock and earth-fill embankment dam with a concrete spillway across the Brisbane River in South East Queensland, Australia.The dam takes it names from the local Wivenhoe Pocket rural community. The dam wall is located about 80 kilometres (50 mi) by road from the centre of Brisbane.The primary purpose of the dam is the supply of potable water for the Brisbane and Ipswich Wivenhoe Dam was built in the 1980s to provide flood protection to south-east Queensland after the devastating 1974 floods. In 2011, releases from the dam contributed to extensive flooding in Wivenhoe Dam was designed and built as a multifunctional facility. The dam was built upstream of the Brisbane River, 80 kilometres from Brisbane City. At full supply level, the dam holds approximately 2,000 times the daily water consumption needed for Brisbane.
