They dedicated it to St Saviour - a name that still resonates in the neighbourhood. Abbey Street also marks Bermondsey's monastic origins. The monks reclaimed the land, embanked the river, built St Saviours Dock as their port and cultivated the fields. They also laid out Bermondsey Street, although this was entirely re-built in 1680. Their Arch 11 taproom opened in 2019, and is now an essential stop-off along the Bermondsey Beer Mile, serving a a wide range of styles from table beer and IPA to porter and pilsner. The suet leans soggy but the mixture is pleasingly traditional, especially alongside smears of almost-smooth mash. With the right dusting of salt and pepper this is a plate that can be quickly shovelled down, and you can even finish with a scoop of Manze's ice cream.
