He is best known for his teachings on the pursuit of pleasure and avoidance of pain. His philosophy was based on the idea that pleasure is the chief good, and that pain should be avoided at all costs. He also believed in the power of friendship and the importance of thinking for oneself. Epicurus was born on February 4 th, 341 B.C., the second of four brothers, on the island of Samos in the Aegean Sea just off the west coast of what is now Turkey (a region Greek culture was spread into various cities as far east as Afghanistan and Pakistan.
