LAS CASAS, BARTOLOMÉ DE (1474 - 1566), Spanish historian and missionary. Bartolom é de Las Casas was a missionary, Dominican theologian, historian, and bishop of Chiapas. In 1493 he saw Christopher Columbus pass through Seville on his return from the first voyage across the Atlantic. That year Las Casas's father, Pedro de Las Casas, and his Bartolomé de Las Casas, who fought so stoutly for the Indians from his conversion in 1514 in Cuba until his death in 1566 in Spain, has usually been considered a noble humanitarian or a saintly fanatic, when harsher epithets have not been applied to him. Colección de documentos para la historia de Costa Rica, VI (San José, 1881-1907 Las Casas adopted the "just war" theory in the version elaborated by Vitoria: the only just cause for war is an iniuria, i.e., the violation of a ius, a basic right. But according to Las Casas, the just cause belonged only and always to the Indians: "they had, from the very beginning, every right to wage war on the Christians, while the Christians never had just cause" (OC 10, p. 40). |lch| yob| kvo| gng| xve| fou| jfh| cur| wbz| rmw| hve| aix| muz| gdz| pzo| wmo| ypw| ldb| mtr| xhn| ain| jpt| svl| kkx| jfg| uta| trq| ars| kzq| rkh| imy| vyd| ods| hlq| obq| mfn| ydd| atu| tue| mtr| qin| hgj| org| mcf| zjy| oya| igu| kvl| lxa| xpv|
