Cynotilapia is a genus of haplochromine cichlids. All fishes in these genus form part of the mbuna flock, the rock-dwelling fishes of Lake Malawi , in the rift valley of East Africa . All species are polygamous , maternal , ovophile mouthbrooders and carry their fry in this fashion for about 20-30 days. This variant is found near Cobue along the coast of Mosambique. In the lake the males of these species can grow to 9 cm, in the aquarium however they can grow taller because of a good feeding. The males can then grow to about 12 cm, females grow to about 9 cm. Cynotilapia zebroides "Cobue" can behave intolerant against equal species but also to Cynotilapia afra, the afra cichlid or dogtooth cichlid, is a small species of cichlid fish from Lake Malawi in East Africa, where found in rocky habitats.
