Dr. Larue Carter was born in Westfield, Indiana in 1880 and graduated from the Medical College of Indianapolis in 1904. He interned at the Indianapolis City Hospital and the Philadelphia General Hospital and was a resident at Eastern Indiana Hospital for the Insane in Richmond, Indiana. In the late 1910s, he served in the Army Medical Corps A year after the administration of then-Gov. Joe Kernan proposed building a new Larue D. Carter Memorial Hospital, the future of Indianapolis' lone state-owned psychiatric hospital remains murky. The state-run mental hospital at 1315 West 10th Street calls on the expertise of physicians, nurses, and other staff from the adjacent IU Medical Center.
