Kiveton Park is an ungainly village, originally a hamlet until the nineteenth century when Kiveton Park Colliery was sunk and the demand for local housing suddenly increased. As such, it lacks a real village centre and is essentially the nineteenth century equivalent of a "ribbon development" strung out along either side of a main road.
