Acquisition Information: The library and archives of the Saalfield Publishing Company of Akron, Ohio, were purchased by Kent State University in April, 1977. The Saalfield Company published children's books and other products from 1899 to 1977 and was, at one time, one of the largest publishers of children's materials in the world. Arthur J. Saalfield came to Akron and became manager of the company's trade book department. Eight years later, Saalfield bought the department and moved it into a plant in South Akron, where it grew over the years into the Saalfield Publishing Company, the largest publisher of children's books in the world. Albrecht "Brec" Saalfield. Albrecht "Brec" Saalfield, age 72, passed away peacefully on Friday, September 16, 2011 at his Concord residence with his loving wife Melissa Carey Saalfield by his side. Born in Akron, Ohio on January 26, 1939 he was the son of the late Henry R. and Mary V.
