The western rainbowfish, Melanotaenia australis Castelnau is one of the most common and widespread freshwater fish on Australia's north coast. It ranges from the Ashburton River in the Pilbara region of Western Australia (Merrick & Schmida, 1984) to the Adelaide River in the Northern Territory (Bishop et al., 2001). The Western Rainbowfish was collected from a stream in north-western Australia during the early 1870's by a minister named Bostock. It was scientifically described in 1875 by Castelnau and its scientific name is Melanotaenia australis. It has also been known as Melanotaenia splendida australis.
