It's not really the problem. Particleboard is common in kitchen counters and in bathroom vanities, it's fine to use. If a piece of particle board looks like this after only 4 months without direct contact with water, then you've got a moisture/ventilation problem in your home. It IS the problem. I wanted this mirror so bad lol. Until I really looked at it in the store. It's beautiful and gives off really flattering light. Unfortunately, it's a fixture meant for new build bathrooms where an electrician is setting up a specific box :( it doesn't have a cord/plug, so unless you have a light box already in your wall, you're out of luck.
